Carpet Installation Tools

Plan a small carpet patch or removal

Identify the exact damage, matching carpet and access to the old edge before choosing a cutter, puller or joining kit.

Check the full size of the damage

A three-inch cutter produces a repeatable circle if the whole area fits within it. For a longer edge or irregular shape, choose a separate knife and lay out a matching donor piece. Check pile direction on both pieces.

Choose how to reach the old material

A pulling clamp grips an exposed carpet edge. A tack lifter works on individual fasteners, and a strip bar lifts the strip below the edge. Select a contact point that suits the material you need to remove.

Check the joining system

Compare the backing, the specified joining method and any tape the kit supplies. A roller presses the finished join. It does not cut a donor patch. Compare a kit with a separate cutting tool if you need both steps.

Guide questions

Does a circular kit come with a donor piece?

Provide matching carpet yourself.

Can I choose a kit by tape length alone?

Check backing compatibility, roller contact and whether you need a cutter.

What should I use for old tack strip?

Choose a documented lifting tool rather than a carpet-edge clamp.

Which accessory suits the job?

  1. The Crain and Orcon cutters both specify a three-inch circle. The Orcon offer names six pressure discs, while the Crain document identifies a cutter and storage cap.

  2. The ROBERTS puller grips an exposed carpet edge. The Mantis bar reaches under tack strip and pivots to lift it. Choose the part you need to remove.
