Choosing backing cutters, row tools and shears

Find the row before cutting

Use a row finder whose end suits the pile construction. A notched or extended nose can help a compatible cutter follow the prepared row. Choose the blade side and depth on an offcut with the same backing.

Separate a finished seam edge from a rough cut

A stand-up cutter is useful for a rough cut along a marked line. A handheld seam cutter has a different contact point near the yarn row. Blunt-tip shears help trim pile without taking the place of the cutter for the backing.
